This Ring is named after an Indian Urdu novelist, short story writer, and filmmaker, Ismat Chugthai. She wrote extensively about female sexuality and feminity, class conflicts, and middle-class gentility, which was quite a taboo during the 1930s. Her personality was a fearless one, being a Muslim she had a major interest in Hindu as well as the Christian religion. Chughtai established herself as a significant voice in the Urdu literature of the twentieth century, and in 1976 was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India.
